A counselor for Prakriti Sahodaran, a men’s sexual health project, strikes a pose with a hijra friend at the annual Aravan festival in South India. The festival celebrate a passage from the Hindu epic Mahabharata in which Lord Krishna transforms himself into a woman for a single night to marry the warrior Aravan before his sacrifice in battle. Each year, thousands of the ‘third gender’ from all over South Asia come to the festival from singing, dancing and ritual mourning for the warrior husband.
