LAST PERFORMANCE
The Badi were once a caste of itinerant performers who sang and danced in the
palaces of minor South Asian nobility. Today many Badi, through not all, are
reduced to prostitution. Tatalau, now 79, is among the last of the Bad who performed
a s a classical singer and dancer. Says Tatalau, ‘The girls today are like the wind.
They do not have the patience and discipline necessary for classical music. That is
why they have to prostitute themselves.’

BADI KIDS
It is extremely difficult for Badi girl children to escape a life of prostitution. Most of the few Badi girls who enter primary school soon drop out, in part because they are treated as untouchables- and worse, as members of a “sex worker caste”- and in part because girls are encouraged by their families to direct their lives towards sex work. MOTHERHOOD
Kailashi, a Badi mother, playing with her son. “I was a beautiful child with curly
hair. The high castes and “big” people played with me and gave me rupees when I
danced. My father made drums and my mother begged. And then we came here to
this village and we did pessaa. “Later, my father died’.
