LAST PERFORMANCE
The Badi were once a caste of itinerant performers who sang and danced in the
palaces of minor South Asian nobility. Today many Badi, through not all, are
reduced to prostitution. Tatalau, now 79, is among the last of the Bad who performed
a s a classical singer and dancer. Says Tatalau, ‘The girls today are like the wind.
They do not have the patience and discipline necessary for classical music. That is
why they have to prostitute themselves.’
