Adolescents in Nepal – Between Tradition and Modernity Adolescent girls in today’s Nepal are part of a world in transition. Gender inequality and cultural norms limit their choices and determine their future from a young age. Girls around the world remain more vulnerable to poverty, climate change, food crises, conflict and war. In Nepal, many girls face child trafficking, economic exploitation, domestic violence, sexual harassment and abuse and it’s not surprising that the picture portrayed by the media and donors is often grim and heart-rending. But the reality is a complex one that also includes strength, resourcefulness and encouraging changes. When Thomas L. Kelly set out in October 2012 to capture the images of adolescent girls in Nepal, he returned with images of many strong and confident adolescent girls. These young women are not mere victims of male dominance, criminal activity or poverty. They are valuable assets to the positive development of Nepali society, and deserve attention through a photo exhibition dedicated entirely to them and the broadening scope of their lives. Adolescent girls are situated between tradition and modernity. The new generation growing up in Nepal is more literate, more educated and more gender-egalitarian than ever before. Boys and girls alike are far more open towards an expanded role for women in society. But the modernity that brings so many new dreams and possibilities, and enables these young people to experience so much more mobility, freedom and material wealth, also comes with new risks and challenges. How these young people deal with the challenges facing them, from persistent vulnerabilities to emerging risks, will set the course for Nepal’s future. The photographer Thomas L. Kelly came to Nepal in 1978 as a US Peace Corps Volunteer and has worked for decades as a photo-activist, documenting the struggles of marginalized people and disappearing cultural traditions all over the world.

The Annenberg Space for Photography is pleased to announce its next exhibit – no strangers: ancient wisdom in a modern world, a group show about the wonder of culture and the plight of indigenous people throughout the world. The exhibit is guest curated by esteemed anthropologist, author and photographer Wade Davis. No strangers explores the ways cultures express a shared humanity and navigate the circle of life. It poses a fundamental question: What does it mean to be human and alive? When the people of the world answer this question, they do so in 7,000 unique voices. Tragically, half of these may be silenced within a generation or two. At risk is our human legacy, a vast archive of knowledge and expertise. Photographers featured in the exhibit are Carol Beckwith & Angela Fisher, Wade Davis, Chris Johns, Lynn Johnson, Steve McCurry, Randy Olson, Chris Rainier and Hamid Sardar. Also included are Timothy Allen, Caroline Bennett, James P. Blair, Edward Burtynsky, David Hiser, Aaron Huey, Thomas Kelly, Mauricio Lima, William Fernando Martinez, James Stanfield, Brent Stirton, Amy Toensing, Jeroen Toirkens, A Yin and Gordon Wiltsie. The exhibit will feature an original short documentary produced by Arclight Productions for the Annenberg Space for Photography. Filmed in many locations, from Washington, DC to British Columbia, Canada to London to Mongolia, the documentary will feature additional photographs, interviews and behind the scenes footage with exhibit photographers, indigenous people and experts. The film will examine indigenous cultures through photography’s lens and encourage viewers to consider ancient traditions in a new context. The themes explored in the exhibit include: The Circle of Life, Our Shared Origins, Ancient Wisdom, Sacred Geography, Endangered, Globalization, Ritual & Passages, Beauty, Quest for Spirit and Joy of Culture. Exhibit images present cultures such as the Tibetan Buddhists of Nepal and their 2,500-year-old traditions; the last rainforest nomads who struggle to survive in Borneo; Ethiopian tribes who participate in bull-jumping as a ritual of tribal membership and manhood; and the Lakota in South Dakota who continue their spiritual ceremonies such as Sun Dances and the use of sweat lodges. no strangers celebrates our diverse and sometimes unfamiliar world. The Photography Space's successful IRIS Nights lecture series will continue to offer free presentations featuring photographers and guest artists who document rare and indigenous cultures. The Annenberg Space for Photography will publish an exhibit catalogue showcasing the work of these 24 photographers and their images of rare and distinctive cultures. Also offered for purchase will be a seminal book on body painting and adornment by photographers of African culture, Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher, Painted Bodies: African Body Painting, Tattoos, and Scarification, Rizzoli, September 2012. The public will also be able to purchase no strangers street banners from a selection of four stunning images by renowned photographers who have travelled the world. Proceeds from merchandise will be used for the Annenberg Space for Photography, which is free to the community.

Closed 25 December, 1 January. Tulkus 1880 to 2018 is a project bringing together photographic portraits of tulkus dating from the early days of photography right up until today. In Tibetan Buddhism, a tulku is the recognised reincarnation of a previous Buddhist master (a highly realised teacher or lama, e.g. H.H. the Dalai Lama or H.H. Karmapa) who is able to choose the manner of their rebirth and can often reveal the place of their next birth by means of cryptic clues. It is currently believed that there are over two thousand tulkus. Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art hosts the first exhibition of the project with more than 1000 photographs. This project (a work in progress) aims to achieve a comprehensive survey of most, if not all, tulkus belonging to the various Buddhist and Bonpo schools, in all the areas of the world where Tibetan Buddhism is practiced. A complete photographic archive of this kind has never been compiled before. The portraits exhibited are exactly the same kind as those that are very common in Tibetan culture and visible in monasteries, homes and shops close to monasteries: single portraits of the tulku sitting on a throne in monastic surroundings or single portraits of the face of the tulku. These photographs hold spiritual value and are holy for Buddhists. It is believed that a photograph of the tulku has the same power as the tulku themselves. Tulkus are collectively revered for holding the lineages of oral transmission of all of the Buddha’s teachings, which have been handed down through many generations. Most often they are referred to as Rinpoche or ‘precious one’. An ancient Tibetan thangka (painting) portraying Tsuglag Gyatso, the Third Pawo Rinpoche (c 1567–1630), and dating back to the first half of the 17th century, is displayed as the centrepiece of the exhibition and symbolises the origin of the tulku photographic portrait tradition. Extensive research has been carried out in many areas of the world by a large team of researchers, reaching out to tulkus, monasteries, cultural institutions and individuals (explorers, anthropologists, scholars, photographers, collectors, archives, research societies, museums, universities, etc.). This project also benefits from the extraordinary consultation of the Tibetan historian Tashi Tsering, Director of Amnye Machen Institute, Tibetan Centre for Advanced Studies, Dharamshala, India. Our research and collection will continue until 2018. The second exhibition will be hosted by Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (co-commissioner of the project), where it will run from January 24 to May 5, 2013. The locations of the following eight shows planned have not yet been determined. No profits will be made from this project. All of the photographs borrowed will be returned to their owners after the last exhibition in 2018 and all of the portraits produced specifically for the project will be donated to a single institution. Collectively known as sadhus—derived from the Sanskrit term sadhana denoting “the means for attaining a goal”—these itinerant holy men renounce worldly life, material possessions and social obligations in order to devote their lives to rigorous religious practice and the pursuit of enlightenment. The Hindu ascetics are living embodiments of the spiritual ideals articulated in ancient literature and expressed in the divine models of the gods Shiva and Vishnu, devotion to whom defines the two categories of sadhus: Shaivas and Vaishnavas. Famous for matted locks, ash-covered nakedness, and colorful painted ornamentation (tilaka), the yogi’s body is not only an expression of his sectarian allegiances, religious discipline, and inner visions, but also his primary vehicle for achieving the ultimate goal of liberation. Various methods including celibacy, meditation, yoga, austerities and mortification allow the sadhu to reach an egoless state that transcends the physical body and brings him closer to oneness with the Divine. A long-time resident of Kathmandu, photographer Thomas Kelly has become acquainted with the sadhu inhabitants of the Nepalese city’s holiest shrines and privy to their most personal practices.
